Event Details

Starting on Friday June 4th, No Kings Collective will repurpose a newly completed, 4-story condominium into a temporary mixed-use gallery space. This space will be located at 440 Rhode Island Ave close to the corner of 4th and Rhode Island NW and is a unique mix of multidisciplinary contemporary arts. The entire building space will come alive running from June 4th   – June 26th with 2 day opening reception on Friday June 4th and Saturday June 5th . (Select open hours see below)

With this next endeavor No Kings Collective will continue to bring you creative exhibits and special projects. This event is being produced in close collaboration with ReadysetDC showing yet again a unique take on what the collaborative efforts of informative media and arts can create, featuring another knockout lineup of talented area artists.

Originating in ancient Persia the word Bazaar referred to the marketplace where any manner of crafts, foods and services could be bought, sold or traded for. This has manifested itself into supermarkets, corner stores and shopping malls in modern times. This concept of a bazaar however was the one-stop-shop of its era. In many places the Bazaar represented a space that is more than the sum of its parts as, the areas included music, politics and entertainment. Activation 440 will try to emulate this set up only through fine arts and crafts of local artisans with a modern urban appeal. Meeting the artist at a show opening is the reward for attending any opening event, NKC encourages this idea further with the Bazaar concept not only by creating solitary spaces for these artists to occupy but also encouraging visitors to converse and create dialogue with these creative’s about their works. Interacting on a personal level between the merchant and passerby was at the core of the early Bazaar, and this is what we intend to create.

Activation 440, has under one roof a very diverse mix of artisans, asked also to meet the challenge of presenting fine art with the mentality of the ancient bazaar. As with previous shows the range of works, genres, and mediums within Activation 440 are as diverse as the artists themselves. The merger of both locally and nationally recognized artists with up-and-coming talent creates a healthy blend of ability and ideas to occupy this untraditional space.

Like the Bazaar areas of art are categorized and split respective to the floors they are assigned within The Josephine building. We welcome visitors to thoroughly explore and interact with the entire space.

Artists were asked simply to “run with it,” from the crazy Pop surreal characters and worlds created by local favorite Kelly Towels, to the stunning Mexican-Indian inspired jewelry and designer vinyl creations of Dan Barojas and even the sculpture works of never before shown works of Annie Kielman and mixed media prints of Sarah Martin.

Both opening events will start at 5pm and will include a bar and musical entertainment for the evening.
